Common Questions
Do you prescribe Menopause Hormone Therapy (MHT/HRT)?
Yes. I am a licensed Naturopathic Doctor in Ontario with prescriptive authority and additional certification in menopause care through The Menopause Society. I prescribe and monitor Menopause Hormone therapy (MHT) for appropriate candidates using an individualized, evidence-based approach. Hormone therapy is never “one-size-fits-all,” which is why recommendations are based on your symptoms, medical history, risk factors, stage of menopause, and personal goals. I prescribe Health Canada-approved therapies supported by current menopause guidelines and evidence-based care standards.
Do you prescribe bioidentical hormones?
Yes — many of the hormone therapy products I prescribe are considered bioidentical hormones.
“Bioidentical” simply means the hormone has the same molecular structure as the hormones naturally produced by the human body. Examples include certain forms of estradiol and progesterone that are commonly used in evidence-based menopause care.
However, it is important to understand that bioidentical does not automatically mean compounded.
I do not routinely prescribe compounded bioidentical hormone therapy (cBHT). This is because major menopause organizations, including The Menopause Society, recommend against the routine use of compounded hormones due to concerns regarding:
-
Inconsistent dosing
-
Lack of regulation and standardization
-
Purity and quality concerns
-
Limited safety and efficacy data
You can review their official statement and guidelines here: [MENOPAUSE SOCIETY LINK]
Instead, I prescribe Health Canada-approved hormone therapy products that are evidence-based, standardized, and supported by current clinical guidelines. An additional benefit is that these products are often covered under extended health or prescription drug plans, unlike many compounded products.
Do you prescribe testosterone therapy?
At this time, prescribing testosterone therapy is not within the scope of practice for Naturopathic Doctors in Ontario.
However, I do assess and support women experiencing concerns related to low libido and Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder (HSDD), which is currently the primary evidence-based indication for testosterone therapy in menopause care.
As part of your assessment, I can:
-
Evaluate symptoms and determine whether further assessment for HSDD may be appropriate
-
Review contributing factors such as hormones, medications, stress, sleep, relationship health, and overall wellbeing
-
Order and interpret relevant blood work
-
Provide evidence-based education on risks, benefits, and current guidelines
-
Write advocacy letters to your primary care provider or specialist outlining appropriate considerations and dosing recommendations when indicated
-
Monitor testosterone therapy with ongoing blood work and clinical follow-up if it has been prescribed by another provider
Monitoring is an important part of safe testosterone therapy and, unfortunately, is often not being done thoroughly enough. My goal is to help ensure women receive informed, evidence-based, and appropriately monitored care.
I think I need blood work — what is your testing policy?
As a licensed naturopathic doctor in Ontario, I run blood work in my office every day for my patients. Blood work gives us a more accurate picture of your health and symptoms. Blood work and testing are ordered based on your individual symptoms, health history, medications, risk factors, and clinical assessment. Not every patient requires extensive testing, and recommendations are always evidence-based and personalized to your care. Please note that laboratory testing is not included in appointment fees and are NOT covered by OHIP. Check your extended benefits to see if they can be covered there.
Testing will be discussed during an appointment so we can determine what investigations are appropriate and how results may impact your treatment plan. Routine testing requests are not completed over email without assessment.
I need a prescription refill — what is your refill policy?
Prescription refills require appropriate follow-up and monitoring to ensure your treatment remains safe, effective, and appropriate for your current health status.
Whenever possible, refills should be discussed and completed during scheduled follow-up appointments. Please keep track of how much medication you have remaining and book follow-ups in advance to avoid interruptions in treatment.
Requests for urgent refills outside of an appointment may be subject to an administrative refill fee.
Please note:
-
Refill requests are not guaranteed without appropriate follow-up
-
Some prescriptions may require updated blood work or reassessment before renewal
-
Refill turnaround times may vary, so last-minute requests should be avoided whenever possible
The safest and most efficient way to manage prescriptions is through regular follow-up care and monitoring appointments.
Do you offer virtual appointments?
Yes. Virtual appointments are available for patients located in Ontario, Canada. Appointments are conducted through a secure online platform and allow us to discuss symptoms, review blood work and testing, create treatment plans, prescribe therapies when appropriate, and provide ongoing follow-up care — all from the comfort of your home. It's still important that you come prepared by testing the setting on your computer and make sure you have strong wifi before logging on to your appointment to avoid disruptions. Please note that some concerns may require in-person assessment or physical examination, in which case this will be discussed during your visit.
How do I reschedule or cancel an appointment?
Appointments can be rescheduled or cancelled through your patient portal (Jane) or by contacting the clinic directly by phone. We kindly ask for a minimum of 24 hours notice for any appointment changes. Late cancellations or missed appointments with less than 24 hours notice are subject to the full appointment fee. This policy helps protect appointment availability for other patients waiting for care and supports the time reserved specifically for you. If you need assistance accessing your portal or managing your appointment, please contact the clinic and we would be happy to help.
Do you offer direct billing?
Yes. Direct billing is available for select insurance providers.
Coverage for naturopathic services varies depending on your individual insurance plan, so we recommend confirming your specific coverage, deductibles, and reimbursement limits directly with your provider prior to your appointment.
Please note:
-
Direct billing is not guaranteed for all plans
-
Patients are responsible for any remaining balances not covered by insurance
-
Laboratory testing, supplements, and prescriptions are billed separately and may not be covered under naturopathic benefits
I have a question between appointments — how do I contact you?
For administrative questions, appointment changes, or brief clarifications, you may contact the clinic by email or through the patient portal (Jane).
Please note that email and portal messaging are not appropriate for urgent medical concerns, emergencies, or complex medical discussions. Questions involving new symptoms, medication changes, treatment adjustments, interpretation of results, or detailed medical advice typically require a follow-up appointment to ensure safe and individualized care.
Response times may vary depending on clinic volume, and messages are answered during business hours only.
If you are experiencing a medical emergency, please call 911 or seek urgent medical care immediately.
